What Is Apartment Audit? (And Why Denton Needs It)

Landlords can hide behind glossy photos and curated reviews. They can't hide from the truth β€” and DNTN! is here to get it.

Finding an apartment in Denton shouldn't feel like a gamble. But for too many renters, it is.

You've seen the glossy photos. The "too good to be true" listings instilling false hope of affordability. The demo-room apartment tours, only to be placed in a totally different unit. You're sold on big promises at the front office until you move in β€” then reality hits.

Denton is a renter's town. It's made up of Students, young professionals, and low-income families. But finding a place to live that actually matches the listing? That's harder than it should be.

Apartment Audit is about accountability β€” giving power back to the people who live in Denton's apartments, not just the people who own them. We're shining a light on the landlords who take advantage of their tenants and the complexes that cut corners.

The Problem

The worst offenders are the "cheap" apartments. The ones marketed to students and low-income renters. The ones that offer the lowest legal minimum of living standards β€” and nothing more.

Hidden fees. Unresponsive landlords. Mold behind the walls. Security deposits that mysteriously disappear no matter how well you clean.

These complexes prey on people who don't know their rights, like students signing their first lease, or desperate families stretched too thin. Renters who don't know, or don't have the option, to push back.

You know those demo-room tours they gave you at the front office? Yeah. Um. This wasn't part of that.

It's not all landlords in Denton, but it's a lot of them. And too many renters are left in the dark β€” signing a lease based on a sanitized website and a tour, then hoping for the best.

Almost everyone on staff at DNTN! has personally experienced the shitty landlords of Denton, and we've had enough. That's why we created Apartment Audit.

How It Works

First, we collect anonymous resident feedback and tips from residents about the state of their unit. Then we go on-site to investigate, going door to door to corroborate their claims.

We ask questions like:

  • How's maintenance? Are you actually getting what you pay for?
  • What about safety, noise, and parking?
  • Is the landlord responsive β€” or do they disappear the moment you sign the lease?
  • How much do you rent for, and do you plan on re-signing your lease?

We collect the feedback, anonymize it, and publish the truth. Good, bad, and ugly. A transparent look at the state of the complex, empowering Denton renters to make a more informed decision.

I know you're not legally required to provide a mirror, but come on. 3 months of "we're getting to it" and we're still waiting.

Because landlords can hide behind polished websites, curated Google reviews, and sparkling front-office tours. They can't hide from the truth β€” and DNTN!is here to get it.
