We get it. You've been inundated with posts begging people to adopt, foster, and donate items to the animal shelter. And it's needed right now: Linda McNatt is currently at maximum capacity, and is in emergent need of help. But if you feel like you're not in a position to help the shelter, all these posts do is make you sad β and we have a bad habit of avoiding them entirely.
BUT WAIT, WAIT!
What if there was a way you could help β without adopting, without spending money, and without a long-term commitment?
Enter: β¨fosteringβ¨
Renters. Students. Pet lovers on a budget. Fostering is the pet hack you didn't know existed β and it costs you nothing.
Even better? Fostering is a short-term deal, perfect people not ready to commit to a life-long pet, but still want a furry friend in their lives.
Fostering isn't just for people with big hearts and endless patience. It's a practical, flexible, and surprisingly underrated way to get your animal fix β without the long-term weight or financial responsibility of pet ownership.
What Is Fostering?
When most people think of fosters, they think of the big hearted ladies who are deeply involved with their local rescue. And while those women are awesome (Seriously, kudos to them.) they aren't the only type of people who foster, and it's time we break away from that narrative.
So what is fostering, actually?
Fostering couldn't be easier. You open your home to a pet for a few weeks or months until they find their forever home. That's it. Instead of living in the stressful, unfamiliar shelter environment, you provide them a familiar and comfortable home.
And when pets are living more comfortably, that's when their true personalities shine β and their chances of adoption increase tenfold.
And the best part? The shelter covers everything. Food, supplies, vet care. Your only job? Provide love, patience, and a safe space for a pet to exist.
The Perks
Besides fostering being an all expenses paid pet-cation, it's also extremely flexible. Does your current foster not feel like a good fit? Swap them for another. Feeling burnt out from your job? Take a break from fostering. Do you only have time to foster in the summers, when you're not in classes? That's totally fine too.
Another great perk about fostering is you'll get to meet a wide-variety of pets, which is great for pet-lovers. Whether you want to raise kittens, read a book with an experienced lap-cat, have a walking buddy to take on the trail, or enjoy the quiet company of a senior dog β fostering provides you with a variety of options that can fit any phase of life.
And whether you foster once, or foster as a lifestyle, you can feel good knowing you're committing a special kind of pet-ownership that saves lives. Fostering may seem small, but to an animal in need, the difference between time spent in a kennel and time spent around a real family means the whole world.
Imagine a Life as Foster
Bevo's Story
Imagine you're out taking Bevo out for an afternoon walk. (He's a real dog waiting at Linda McNatt's shelter right now, and he's been needing a foster for weeks.)
Before Bevo, you used to feel nervous walking alone. But with him by your side, you feel safer β and he feels better getting out of the shelter and into fresh air. You both needed this.
As you're walking, someone approaches you on the street. They're charmed by Bevo's floppy ears and wagging tail. They ask to pet him.
And this is where fosters become heroes: "He's not actually mine β I'm fostering him. He's with me only until he finds his forever home."
And just like that, you're doing more than walking a dog. You're exposing the world to who Bevo really is β the goofy, gentle, good boy that doesn't get to shine through in a shelter kennel.
Bevo's a total joy who loves everyone he meets. From his world-class nub-tail butt wiggles to his hilarious backyard zoomies, Bevo is pure entertainment. He absolutely LOVES a good squeaky toy and is so very playful! And after playtime is over? He is all about the snuggles.
Bevo would do best in a single-pet household, where he can be the star of the show. He's not aggressive towards other dogs, but prefers to live solo. If you're looking for a perfect trail buddy, or a happy-go lucky friend to lift your spirirts, Bevo's your guy.
A few weeks later, Bevo gets adopted. His new family saw that spark in him during a meet-and-greet, and they fell in love.
Saying goodbye to Bevo was hard. You'd grown attached to his morning wiggles and the way he'd rest his head on your knee during movie nights. But it was absolutely worth it. You connected him to a family that will love him forever, and that joy overpowers any sadness from missing him.
Now you get photos of Bevo on Instagram. You see him running through his new backyard, curled up on his new couch, living his best life. It always makes you smile. That was your victory β you helped create that.
After Bevo's adoption you take a break from fostering for a few weeks. You enjoy the dog-free time. You sleep in. You go out on late-nights without having to rush back. But eventually, when the weather starts to crisp up and you ache for your morning walks again, you find yourself back on the shelter's website β ready to start a new adventure.
Fawn's Story
It's late at night, and you're curled up on the couch, watching TV.
You used to have a cat back home β the family cat you grew up with, who would curl up in your lap and purr you to sleep. When you moved out on your own, you had to leave that familiar comfort behind.
You have the space. You have the time. But with rent, groceries, and just trying to keep your head above water, the cost of pet ownership isn't something you can swing right now. The idea of an unexpected vet bill makes your stomach twist, and you know now isn't the right time.
You spend your afternoons alone, daydreaming of the day you can afford the luxury of pet companionship you so desperately miss. When you discover the opportunity of fostering, that day is today.
Suddenly, the gap in your life is filled. Your foster cat, Fawn, curls up next to you, purring. The shelter covered all the supplies, and you rest easy knowing Fawn is covered if they ever need care. You get the comfort and companionship you've been missing β without the long-term financial weight. Maybe this was meant to be all along.
You both rest a lot easier, being cuddled up together. To both of you, this feels more like home.
Fawn is not aggressive, fully litter trained, and looking for a home with no other pets. If you're missing the feeling of a sweet cat purring on your lap, please consider taking a chance on fostering Fawn.

The Bottom Line
You don't have to adopt to save a life. You don't need to be the perfect person. You don't even have to spend money.
You just have to be willing to try.
Fostering is free. It's flexible. And while one foster might not change the world, it changes the whole world of the pet you take in.
Thank you for considering fostering.
